“The scene unfolding before my eyes is a long battle (Und das war ein langer Kampf)…” This black and white video opens with these powerful words. Eight professors and students from Ewha read literary passages in their languages of expertise. Korean, Chinese, English, French, German... The forceful recitations by experts and scholars from various fields defy any notion of a “feminine tone.” Here, only women - indeed, only humans - exist.
The project aimed to reexamine and elevate works by female authors, often undervalued due to male-centric perspectives. What makes this video special is that women are involved at every level - from the authors of the passages to the readers and the production team.As the project lead, I planned, filmed, and edited the video. My colleague, Kim Bo-young, meticulously researched and selected meaningful literary passages, ensuring accuracy and proper sourcing. We faced challenges in verifying translations and directing participants unfamiliar with camera work, but these experiences added depth to the project. The editing process focused on creating unique typography that celebrated the linguistic diversity. While inspired by Marie Claire’s gender-free series, we maintained each passage's integrity and developed original subtitle designs. This project not only showcases women's literature across languages but also highlights the collaborative effort of women in academia and media production. It serves as a powerful statement on women as subjects who write, read, and speak, transcending the notion of a “feminine tone” and emphasizing our shared humanity.
